Long period of
inactivity - I apologise for long
period of apparent inactivity. I have quietly been dealing with direct
orders and orders via Amazon but entering new items into the catalogues
and ebay sales have had to take a back seat. We are in the process of
upgrading the kitchen which has taken up a great deal of time. From
today we have a sink again so no more washing pots in the bath etc.!

Error in my ebay listing for 5.December.2007 -
Please note I mistakenly listed the WOLF CUB CHART as from
the 1920's. The chart depicts a 'Leaping Wolf' badge. This badge was not
introduced until 1947. Therefore the date should be c.1947. I apologise
for this error. I thank MS for drawing my attention to this mistake. I
still think my pricing is correct as the item is scarce. Incidentally
because the item has attracted a bid ebay will not allow me to amend the
main body of the entry - I can only add an error note. I have of course
contacted the bidder and advised him/her of my oversight.

What to collect !! - When I became a Scout Leader I
decided to collect scouting memorabilia. At first I collected all and
everything that came my way. I quickly discovered that there is so much
material out there that one has to specialise. Initially I specialised
in Scout and Guide philately. After a few years I had built up quite a
comprehensive collection. To help fund my collection I started to do
small time dealing.
They say dealers are nothing but frustrated collectors. In time the
dealing was taking up more and more time and I was forced into becoming
a bona fide business mainly to keep the dreaded Inland Revenue happy.
The only items I collect now are postcards of my local area. I suppose
you could say that my stock is my collection. I certainly get great
pleasure in handling such varied material and items I have never seen
before keep turning up. I also enjoy the process of contacting and
corresponding with so many interesting collectors from all over the
world. (to be continued)

(Possibly Youth against Racism?) Any additional information please. (Mint
condition. On offer at GBP 0.90)

Disheartening weekend of sport for the English
- So much hope and then practically everything dashed! England football
needing a miracle to stay in the European Championship. England rugby
playing well but South Africa outplaying them for the World Cup and
Louis Hamilton just missing out on the Formula One Championship.
Middlesbrough FC also lost 0-2 to Chelsea. (Betty and I are Boro
season ticket holders) The only consolation this weekend was that my
grandson Tom's team won 5-0 He plays for Redcar Town in the
Teesside Alliance under 14 league division one. They are now top of the
league. The Teesside Alliance is probably the largest junior football
league in the world. It has teams for each year for boys aged under 8 up
to under 18 with six divisions for each year group and twelve teams in
each division. That is over 700 teams and involves around 10,000
registered youngsters. A truly magnificent organisation.
Unidentified Badge
(Ref: U11) - Anyone recognise this badge ? - It is 38mm dia. Woven/bound.
White twill back. A leaping big wolf? Any information gladly received. (Mint condition. On
offer at GBP 0.45)

My second involvement with Scouting
- We have a daughter Anne-Marie and a son John. When our daughter got to
brownie age there was a local pack that she joined. When our son reached
cub scout age the nearest pack was ten miles away. We wanted our son to
experience the fun and discipline that scouting offered. With some
friends from the next village we decided to start a new group to offer
scouting to children from the local villages. We called the group
ESKVALE which served the upper Esk Valley. After intensive training our
friends were appointed Group Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. I was
appointed as Scout Leader and my wife (Betty) as Assistant Cub Scout
Leader. The group was soon a huge success with dozens of boys joining
from a wide area. Betty and I operated in the group for over ten years
whilst our son progressed up to Venture Scout. Once our son went to Rose
Bruford College in Kent to study for a degree in drama and because
of work pressures we dropped out of the group as leaders. We had ten
very enjoyable years. The Eskvale Group continued for several years
after we left but sadly now no longer exists due to
the age old problem of not being able to attract leaders.

Thousands of items still to list - I still have thousands of
items to enter into my catalogues. If I could average say twenty pieces
a day I should be able to list over seven thousand in a year. Surely
there must be something in there that will interest your good self. If
you have some particular theme that you collect please let me know and I
will try to give priority when selecting material to scan etc.

Whitby as a Scout District - Whitby
as a scout district has never been ultra strong. The maximum number of
groups has been seven and down to today's just one group in Whitby
itself. I suppose it is due to the fact that it is largely a rural
community and relatively sparsely populated. In the past it was an
extremely popular area for scout and guide camps with up to twenty
groups from all over the country camping at any one time. In my scout
days I visited many of these camps with our SM who was also ADC and a
designated Camp Visitor. I started collecting badges on these trips. I
remember getting a badge from an Ayrshire troop which seemed to be the
other side of the world to a simple country boy like me. Later in my
scouter years I did my stint as a Camp Visitor.

My first
introduction to Scouting - I became a scout in the early
1950's. I joined the "1st GLAISDALE" troop which was run by the
local railway Station Master - 'Skip Patterson' Our headquarters was
Glaisdale Primary School which was situated high up on on the edge of
the moors. We were a motley lot of around twelve boys divided into the
Curlew and Wolf patrols. Large and small dressed in uniform that was
anything but uniform when you looked from one boy to the next. The
skip's strength was woodcraft and we spent many happy hours out in the
woods and on the moors. The only thing I disliked was that every now and
then in the winter months we would have boxing matches there being two
pairs of boxing gloves in the kit box. I came home a few times with a
bloody nose! I eventually rose to the giddy heights of Patrol
Leader of the Wolves.

helpful. Please go to

Another Great
Day - Spent a few hours in the
garden again. We have about three
quarters of an acre of garden that
needs regular attention. Started to trim the hedges for the last time
this year. I used to use hand shears. The exercise was good for me but
it took several days to complete. Last year I treated myself to some
petrol shears and now I can do the cutting much swifter and with a
better finish.
In spring we were plagued with
rabbits. They nibbled at practically all the low growing plants and
shrubs. I decided to try and rabbit fence the garden. For the last three
months I seemed to have cracked it!
They are now back again. The problem may be the fact that a public
footpath is routed straight through our grounds and if walkers do not
shut the gates correctly then bugs bunny can find his way in.
Unidentified Badge (Ref: U3) - Can you shed
any light on the badge below ? - It is woven on 19mm white ribbon. Green
scout sign on yellow. Mint condition. Probably a six or patrol patch. Which country ?
(On
offer at GBP 0.30) It is from Norway. Thanks MB.

Weather
- After seven days of rain and cold weather at last we have had a decent
day in the North Yorkshire Moors. As a consequence I have spent a few
hours out in the garden thus restricting my computer time.
Featured Website - Have you visited
Johnny Walkers
Scouting Milestones website yet ?
It is loaded with useful information and should be on every Scout/Guide
collector's favourites list. Give it a visit. You will not be
disappointed.

To improve my service to collectors
and interested persons I have decided to introduce this regular news blog. News and notices will be posted almost daily.
The last seven entries will be displayed.
The page
should therefore be worth revisiting on a regular basis.
There will be regular (almost daily) notices such as:-
Number of new items uploaded to sales catalogues, etc.
Details of interesting items entered with ebay.
Illustrations of badges that I need help in identifying.
General news from Thorneywaite.
Betty
(my wife) and I have just returned from a wonderful week's holiday in
the Cotswolds. We did some country walking, visited many gardens and saw
Richard Wilson in the play "Whipping It Up" at the Everyman Theatre, in
Cheltenham. We were extremely lucky with the weather. Only one morning
with rain.
